Is there going to be a Yard Sale this year?
Yes!! At this time, we are planning to have the yard sale… but a lot of things will be different from how we have done them in the past. These changes are in keeping with health officials’ guidelines for safely having in-person gatherings during this time of the COVID-19 pandemic. First of all, the primary goal of everything we don in preparation of, and in the presentation of our 150 Family Yard Sale is to keep everybody safe. Social distancing and face coverings are a MUST for ALL attending the sale.
When will this year’s 150 Family Yard Sale take place?
The yard sale will be on two different Saturday’s this year – August 22nd and August 29th. The hours of the sale on both Saturday’s will be from 7:00 am until 3:00 pm (with the “Bag Sale” at 2:00 pm).
Why two different days, and an earlier start time than usual?
Nothing will be sold from inside the church building. All sales will be outside under the tents or in the Parnell Pavilion. Therefore, everything that we used to sell inside in the past (all clothes, yard goods, jewelry, electronics, books, DVD’s and CD’s) will be sold outside on Saturday, August 22nd.
On August 29th, we’ll be selling the furniture, tools, household goods, knick-knacks, Christmas and crafts, and toys and games.
As for the start time… the biggest concern with events like this is large crowds that are in close physical contact (like the 200+ people who would be lined up for our 9:00 am opening time!). By opening at 7:00 am, a lot of the early-bird people will have come and left by the time others arrive at 9:00 am.
What about the bridge construction? What if the road is closed?
The north driveway of the church is closed due to the bridge and round-about construction taking place. There is a slight possibility that the bridge will be closed, but THE CHURCH WILL BE ACCESSIBLE from the south. Parking will be at a premium. Please drive carefully, follow the signs to proper parking areas, and watch out for pedestrians!
What about the baked goods table?
This year, there will be NO FOOD SOLD at the yard sale. This includes baked goods, donuts and pizza. There will be large tubs with bottled ice water in them set around the tents and pavilion, which will be free to all.
Do you accept items from people who are not members of Geneseo UMC?
Yes! We gladly accept items in good, working condition from everyone. Everything from toys to clothes to electronics and kitchen-ware, and most things in between.
Things we don’t accept:
We DO NOT ACCEPT old CRT television sets or computer monitors. Flat screen TVs and monitors must be in working condition. We also do not accept “entertainment centers.”
When can I bring stuff down to the church to donate to the sale?
There will be a receiving crew in the Fellowship Hall, from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, Monday, August 17th through Friday, August 21st. NOTE: August 21st will be the LAST DAY to bring items to the church to donate for this year’s sale.
What does Geneseo UMC use the proceeds from the sale for?
The 150 Family Yard Sale is our premier fund-raising event. At a minimum, 10% of the proceeds support our Benevolence Budget. This budget helps to fund our many mission partners, including the Geneseo Parish Outreach Center, a health center serving the un-insured and under-insured; Teresa House, a hospice house in Geneseo, Asbury Camp and Retreat Center; Red Bird Mission serving those in need in the Appalachia area of Tennessee; Habitat for Humanity; humanitarian and disaster relief through the United Methodist Committee on Relief; Wings of the Morning, reaching remote areas with medical care in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and many more.
The remaining proceeds are used for our Current Expense budget, which pays the everyday bills – worship supplies, education materials, salaries, utilities, building maintenance, etc.
What’s the most important thing that I can do for the 150 Family Yard Sale in the coming weeks?
Pray! Pray that infection levels in New York State do not go up (for more than just the yard sale’s sake). Pray for the safety of all involved in our sale – workers and customers alike. And pray that God may once again use our sale, especially during the challenges this pandemic has incurred on so many in our midst, to show all who shop here (or even just drive by) that we are following in Jesus’ footsteps as a welcoming, caring, giving, and prayerful community of faith.
