The season of Advent is a time of preparation; primarily a time of spiritual preparation. Today we consider how to do that.

Today’s scripture readings are Isaiah 40:1-5 and Mark 1:1-8.

Prepare yourself for worship with the reading of Psalm 98: 1-6, and the singing of “A Voice Cries Out,” by Michael Joncas.

This week Pastor Keith is preaching from the Gospel of Mark.  He gives a brief background about Mark’s Gospel can be found beginning at 7:10. These verses help to tie in what is gone before in the Old Testament to what God is now doing in Jesus.

Seasonal Preparation

What is the one thing in your life that signals the start of the season?

How much time are you allowing for spiritual preparation compared to seasonal preparation?

Spiritual Preparation

Call to attention: What was John saying that got people to travel 20 miles, one way, on foot or by donkey? What did he say that maybe can help us as we have our preparation in Advent?

  • Mark 1:2-3
Repentance
  • Mark 1:4
  • Mark 1:7
  • Mark 1:14-15
Spiritual Evaluation
  • Mark 1:7
  • John 3:27-30
Who we are preparing for?

We are to prepare ourselves for the One who has come, and who is going to come again – Emmanuel, God with us.

  • Mark 1:3
  • John 1:14
Make the path straight

We are to get rid of all the debris, all of the bumps, all of the ruts in the road. We are to level out the road that leads to our heart, and make it easy for the Christ-child to come into our hearts.

As we close today’s worship with the hymn, “Joy to the World,” reflect on the lyrics “let every heart prepare Him room.” For a less traditional version, check out this rendition by the a cappella group, Pentatonix.
