From Elijah we learn that when we are under stress we need to get away and spend time with God, and listen to what God wants to say. Read 1 Kings 19:1-16

We open today with a reading from Psalm 105:1-8.

Listen to “Only in God,” by John Michael Talbot, a song to bring us into worship today.

In 1 Kings 18:20-39  We’re told about Elisha’s greatest victory in defending Yaweh. He had been used by God to bring the world to repentance; Elisha restored the worship of Yaweh, but…

Burnout Can Happen to Anyone.

1 Corinthians 10:12-13

Consider Elisha in today’s passage, and Peter in Matthew 14:25-31.

If people of faith that we hold up can be defeated by stress and burnout, any one of us can be as well.

Burnout destroys your ability to think straight.

1 Kings 19:4

1 Kings 19:10

Stress won’t go away until you do something about it

If you’re in a period of stress, you need some time to get away; you need to be alone with God.

  1. We need to take care of our physical needs – 1 Kings 19:6
  2. Seek God in solitude. Share your deepest feelings.  The Gospels tell us that, over three years, Jesus took 20 different times to go on retreat to be with God the Father.
  3. Listen for God’s voice in the silence – 1 Kings 19:12-13

The purpose of going on retreat to being with God is to place yourself in God’s presence long enough to get God’s perspective on what’s going on in your life.
