Prayer Correction

The August 4th Prayers included a request for Henry Kelsey’s son, suffering burns in a barn fire.  The young man was Henry’s friend’s son (not Henry’s), but prayers are still very much appreciated.

Yard Sale Drop-off and Operation Move-out

You still have time to clean out closets, find your garage and all those things you’ve saved under the bed (NOT the dust bunnies, you can keep those) and bring down your useful, but no longer needed “stuff” for the 150 Family Yard Sale.  Bill Lewis and crew will be in the Fellowship Hall, Monday – Thursday, August 19-22, from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm.  If you need something picked up, call Bill at 243-4847, or the church office at 243-3160.

Do you have a few hours, and even more muscles?  Join Bill and Crew for Operation Move-Out on Friday morning, August 23rd, at 9:00 am to help move boxes and large items to their proper rooms/tents.  Stop in the Fellowship Hall to see Bill, or look for him on the grounds.  Be forewarned, Bill’s twin Bob will also be around, so make sure you’re talking to the right guy!

Ancestry/Genealogy Class

Scott Canaan is offering a one day (more if there’s interest) Ancestry/Genealogy Class on Wednesday, August 21st at 3:00 pm in Room 3.  Are you interested in tracing your roots?  Don’t know where to start?  Come pick Scott’s brain and start down the road to finding those skeletons in your closet!

Adult Study – “Eternity is Now in Session”

A new adult study, “Eternity is Now in Session,” by John Ortberg, is being offered this fall.

“Are we there yet?”  Most of us think of eternity as something that begins after we die. However, Jesus doesn’t talk about eternity that way. In fact, Jesus defines “eternal life” only once, with great precision, and in a way that has been largely lost in our day. This DVD study looks at his riveting definition and the questions that flow from it. Come join us to find out how we can live the eternal life here and now.

Classes will be on Fridays at either 10:00 am or 1:30 pm, from September 6 – October 4.  Sign up today on the sheet found on the table outside the sanctuary.

Adult Study – “Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time

About fifteen years ago I had a life-changing experience; I became aware of God’s unconditional and eternal love for me and for all of Creation.  I actually experienced the reality of God’s presence as demonstrated by Jesus of Nazareth.

Since that experience I have been richly blessed with mentors and books that God has placed along my path that have provided a deeper understanding of the life, times and teachings of my friend Jesus.
One of the books that I have found to be both enlightening and thought provoking is Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time by Marcus Borg.  The book is subtitled “The Historical Jesus and the Heart of Christianity.”  The book is historically accurate and filled with insights that help bridge the gap between the realities of early first century Israel and twenty-first century western culture.  The book is about neither religion nor theology.  It is about my friend and companion Jesus.

A discussion group is beginning on Monday, September 9th at 7:15 pm.  We will be reading Borg’s book and other selected material and sharing thoughts, ideas, insights and experiences related to the essence of this man and his impact on the lives of those who know him and experience his love.

I hope you will consider joining the group and meeting my friend Jesus again or, maybe, for the first time.

Adopt-a-Student

The Adopt-a-Student program provides college students with a family away from home and church members with a closer connection with our college students. It is a chance to do something fun with family and student: go out to lunch, go to a movie, visit Letchworth, play board games, go to a program at the library, trick or treat together. Activities are limited only by your imagination and interests.

Join us at the Adopt-a-Student luncheon in the Fellowship Hall on September 15, 2019 at 11:45 am, after the second service.  Families, please bring a dish to pass and table service. College students we’ll provide food and table service for you.

Look for the form in your bulletin next week, and fill it out to help us match you up.  Return to the church office or Ben Specht. You can also return in the mail slot at 5 Oak Street.

POC Food Pantry Needs

The Parish Outreach Center’s Food Pantry shelves are running bare.  They are especially in need of peanut butter and jelly, spaghetti and sauce, tuna, canned chicken, soup, all breakfast foods, all sugar-free foods, and toilet paper.  Donated items may be left outside the pantry door opposite the restrooms.
