Understanding the Importance of Play

August 22, 2022

As we move into May, I am reminded of one of the most blessed experiences I had while I was in seminary at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity school.  The class was Women’s Spirituality, taught by Stephanie Sauve.  She used her creativity to encourage us to have fun while learning about God.

We showed up for class May 1st, and she said, “We are going outside to play.”  We all looked at each other and wondered what she was up to now.  There was a lovely stone patio on the south side of the school, and when we went out the nearest doors, we were surprised to see a decorated “May pole” there before us.

Hanging off from it were beautiful ribbons in many colors, and bunches of flowers.  A little hesitant, we all stood to the side.  She turned on some music and told us if we didn’t participate we would fail the class for the day.

The next thing we knew, we were dipping and weaving back and forth, ribbon in hand.  I don’t know when I have had such a wonderful experience.  She then fed us cookies and lemonade.  She understood the importance of play! Especially with a bunch of high strung seminary students.

God, as well, encourages us to take time and see the beauty “springing” all around us.  Flowering trees in a variety of pastels, yellow daffodils, birds singing, and the sound of rain on the pavement.  We can delight in God’s creation all around us and remember,

“This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.”  (Psalm 118:24)

In all things it is good to give thanks to the Lord.  I give thanks for this wonderful church and all of you.

May God bless you and keep you!

Pastor Beth
