New Year’s Eve Worship and Fellowship
We invite you to join us for a special Watch Night Worship Service on Saturday, December 31st at 9:00 pm. This service provides you with the opportunity to review the year that has passed and prepare for the year ahead
Following the Watch Night Service, we open our Fellowship Hall to everyone for a fun, safe New Year’s Eve Party. Bring your favorite board game, play a game of ping pong, watch a kid-friendly movie, and enjoy yummy snacks. And finally, ring in the new year with us at midnight.
Where did the Watchnight tradition come from, you ask? According to Wikipedia:
In the Moravian Church, congregations observe a watchnight service on New Year’s Eve, which is preceded by the celebration of the lovefeast. The three-hour watchnight service of Moravian Christians traces back to at least 1733.
Following the lead of the Moravian Brethren who began having “watch” services in 1733, the founder of the Methodist Church, John Wesley, adopted watch night services in 1740, sometimes calling them Covenant Renewal Services. The services provided Methodist Christians with a godly alternative to times of drunken revelry, including New Year’s Eve.
