On Pentecost, We Wear Red

On Pentecost Sunday (May 28th this year) we remember the day the disciples received the Holy Spirit.  The story in Acts 2 describes a powerful wind and tongues of fire as the Holy Spirit was poured out on people, from all over the world, who came to Jerusalem to celebrate the Jewish Festival of Pentecost, called Shavuot.

Red is historically associated with Pentecost.  Wearing red on Pentecost is an outward sign of the inward transformation by the Holy Spirit in each of our hearts.  It is a visual reminder of the “tongues of fire” that empowered the apostles and others to proclaim the good news of Christ’s resurrection.

Wear Red, Bring Red!

This year, in addition to wearing red on Pentecost, we’re partnering with the Geneseo Parish Outreach Center’s Food Pantry with a special food drive – Wear Red, Bring Red.

On Pentecost Sunday, May 28th, we invite you to bring items for the Food Pantry that are red, or have a red label.  Apples, red potatoes, Campbell soups, spaghetti sauce, strawberry jam…  check the soaps and laundry detergent aisles for red labels (or any label with a bit of red on it)… use your imagination!

Your donations may be placed on the table outside the sanctuary beginning next week.

The Food Pantry accepts fresh produce, non-parishable (canned or boxed) food items, paper goods, and personal hygiene items.
